Judging a shop, a listing, and the guides you read

The agent buys from whoever you point it at. Everything that goes wrong afterwards was decided in the ten minutes before you pasted the link.

Judging a shop before you point at it

Reliable sellers exist on every one of these marketplaces and so do the other kind, and the difference is visible before you order if you know where to look. The agent buys from whoever you point it at, and the published guidance is unusually candid about what that means. On the big retail marketplace, seller quality is described as uneven and authenticity as hard to judge, with the advice to weigh a shop's deposit, its reputation level and its customer feedback before ordering. The brand-mall side is described as costlier and better policed, and the self-run side of the electronics marketplace as the safer place to buy anything with a circuit board in it.

  • Look at what the shop sells besides your item. A shop whose other listings are unrelated is a reseller with no stock, and resellers are where the longest dispatch delays live.
  • Read the option menu as evidence. Menus routinely carry unrelated goods, packaging add-ons, resale tags and made-to-order variants. A tidy menu is a sign of a shop that packs its own orders.
  • Treat stock counts as typed values. The company's own page says online stock and real stock diverge, and that what the seller tells a buying agent is the figure that counts.
  • Expect three to seven days to dispatch. That is the published norm for the retail marketplace, with same-day on the self-run electronics side and three to five days for its franchised shops.

The listing says plenty in stock. Why was my order cancelled?

Posted rule

Because the two numbers are not connected. Whalebuy's page says some sellers rarely update their shop information, so a listing can show inventory the seller does not have, and the figure that decides is what the seller says when an agent contacts them.

Read on Whalebuy's Online platform display "in stock", why WHALEBUY says "out of stock" page, 21 and 22 October 2026.

In practice

On anything you actually need, order early and keep a second listing in reserve. A stock failure costs you the days already spent, not just the order.

Misread as

The cancellation looks like the agent failing to try. The posted position is that the shop page was wrong before anyone touched it.

Deciding

What a listing has to survive

Three things decide whether a listing will survive the journey, and none of them is the photograph. This is how to judge a listing for the trip ahead of it, which is a different exercise from deciding whether you like the thing.

  • Shape before weight. Anything with a rigid box, a wide sole or a frame is a candidate for being billed on volume. The weight calculator settles it in ten seconds.
  • Contents before route. Liquids, creams, powders, cosmetics and anything carrying a lithium battery are refused by some lines entirely, and the restriction is applied at the warehouse after you have already paid for the goods.
  • Measurements before size labels. Sellers print sizing tables onto the product photograph far more often than they publish them as text, and receiving checks compare the label rather than the garment.

Wholesale listings deserve their own warning. On the wholesale marketplace the headline figure usually belongs to a quantity tier rather than to one unit, minimum order quantities are normal, and the same listing may offer sample, ready-stock and made-to-order terms at different prices.

What simply will not travel?

Posted rule

The published lists are long. Tobacco, alcohol and contraband are refused outright. A restricted list names knives and blades of many kinds, lighters, magnetic components, juices, seeds, skates and similar. Cosmetics, creams, powders, liquids and medicines are limited, and the advice is to ask support before buying. Separate guidance flags country sensitivities: beef into the United Kingdom, leather shoes into Italy, animal fur, wood and seeds into Australia, leather and wood products into Japan.

Read on Whalebuy's Notes Before Purchasing page, 21 and 22 October 2026.

In practice

Ask before you buy, not after. A restriction discovered at the warehouse leaves you choosing between an expensive route, a domestic resale and abandoning the goods.

Misread as

People check the prohibited list and skip the limited one. The limited list is where most parcels actually come unstuck.

Deciding

Why pair a Spreadsheet shortlist with Whalebuy?

The useful output of browsing is a short, comparable buying list. A catalogue gets you from an item type to candidate listings; the agent handles the purchase once you choose one. Keeping those tasks separate helps you compare sellers before paying and ask clearer questions after goods arrive.

A jacket comparison that survives checkout

Start with two listings from the jacket shelf. Record each original link, seller, chosen colour, size, quantity and domestic delivery charge. Compare the same garment measurements, not just both sellers' “L” labels. If one advertised price buys only a detachable accessory or a smaller option, remove it from the comparison. A catalogue price is a lead to investigate, not the confirmed cost of your chosen jacket.

Next, write one inspection request alongside each uncertain feature: a flat chest measurement for fit, a zipper close-up for visible damage, or a label view to check the selected variant. Existing QC photos can reveal what deserves attention, but a different customer's photo does not verify your seller's current stock. Use your own order's photo checklist when Whalebuy receives the item.

Use the saved money only after checking the second bill

For a hypothetical shortlist costing ¥160 and ¥190, the ¥30 gap is meaningful only after adding each seller's postage, payment costs and any requested services. A bulkier parcel can outweigh the item-price saving. Use the weight and consolidation calculators with the same route assumptions for both choices, then replace assumptions with Whalebuy's measured parcel before paying freight.

This Question Map is useful when a decision needs the related rule: what the total includes, whether to request a return, or what a route accepts. It does not hold stock, buy goods or see your account. If you already have a verified seller link and no comparison to make, you can go straight to the agent.

Sites like this one are easy to make and cheap to abandon, so apply the same scepticism you would to a seller. Four tests for how to judge a spreadsheet site, including this one:

  • Does it date anything? Fees, windows and route lists move. A page that quotes a figure without saying when it was read is quoting a memory.
  • Does it name the page it read? A claim you cannot trace is a claim you cannot check. Every figure here carries the help page it came from.
  • Does it admit contradictions? This service publishes two top-up fees, two warehouse cities, two opening times and two company names. A site that reports one of each is not reading carefully.
  • Does it say how it is paid? Links from here to the agent and to the catalogue are tagged, and some of them earn a commission. That is written on every page rather than buried.

And the test this site fails: there is nothing here about whether a particular seller is trustworthy, because we have not bought from them. Where a claim would need an order behind it, we do not make the claim.

Seven checks that belong before the money moves

  1. Open the listing itself and price the option you want, not the one on the card.
  2. Check the option menu for children's sizing, resale tags and unrelated goods.
  3. Decide whether the retail box is coming with you, and say so in the notes if it is.
  4. Run the dimensions through a divisor before you fall in love with a cheap route.
  5. Check whether anything in the order is on the limited list.
  6. Have a little balance in the account so a domestic-postage shortfall does not stall things.
  7. Write the likely stored date in your diary, because two clocks start there.
